How It Works

Tap Tempo

Tap along to the beat of a song or a metronome. The calculator measures the time intervals between your taps and averages them to determine the BPM (beats per minute). More taps yield a more accurate result.

BPM to Delay Time

The fundamental formula for converting BPM to delay time in milliseconds:

Delay (ms) = 60,000 / BPM

This gives you the duration of one quarter note. Other note values are derived as multiples or divisions:

  • Whole note: 4 x quarter note
  • Half note: 2 x quarter note
  • Eighth note: quarter note / 2
  • Sixteenth note: quarter note / 4
  • Dotted: note duration x 1.5
  • Triplet: note duration x 2/3
Delay Time to Frequency

To sync LFOs and modulation effects:

Frequency (Hz) = 1000 / Delay (ms)

Delay Time to Samples

For working with sample-accurate timing in a DAW:

Samples = Delay (ms) x Sample Rate / 1000

Common Tempo Markings
  • Largo: 40-60 BPM (very slow)
  • Adagio: 66-76 BPM (slow)
  • Andante: 76-108 BPM (walking pace)
  • Moderato: 108-120 BPM (moderate)
  • Allegro: 120-156 BPM (fast)
  • Vivace: 156-176 BPM (lively)
  • Presto: 168-200 BPM (very fast)
